Check It Out!

header_admin1.gifRemember back in December when we said we were looking for a new name for the What s New blog and e-newsletter? Well, we found one. What s New has officially been renamed Check It Out . For us librarians, it s sort of an in-joke, since every time we recommend a new book with the phrase have you checked out ? or check out this book we really DO want people to check it out! Literally. Thanks to library patrons Ramona Gasper and Susan Hobson for the new name.

We re excited about our new name and our new direction. We ve added sections on Community Issues, Sequoya Construction Updates, and a Director s Take. We re always interested in your feedback and your ideas of topics we should cover. Comment here, or let us know as part of our upcoming customer survey (coming in May).

Changing the name is a two step process for us. Step one was choosing the name and renaming and relinking everything on our web site. Step two will be relocating the enewsletter to a new mail service, and migrating the blog to its new home. When that happens, we ll publish information on how to make sure you re subscribed to the new feed or that the new email doesn t go into your junk folder! We truly hope you ll take the time to Check It Out and discover the many resources the library has to offer you.

Tagging and Metadata for Social Information Organization Workshop

http://www2007.redlog.net/

Last week during the digital content strategy roundtable I sat on at UBC, one of the things I urged was for the librarians there to take tagging seriously (to which I actually got a partially affirmative response). I am not sure if this is a case of be careful what you wish for but not long after urging this I see notice of this upcoming workshop, titled Tagging and Metadata for Social Information Organization being held at my old stomping ground in Banff. Assuming for a second that it can be studied without having all the dynamism that makes it work sucked out of it, here s hoping I don t have to make pleas like that for too many more years. - SWL

Faster than the speed of geek

Jennifer shares an interesting idea for career education: speed geeking. I ll shamelessly quote what Jennifer quotes:

In speed geeking, small groups of students meet with one professional librarian (aka geek) at a time to gain insight into what it s like to be a working librarian. You can ask questions about their job, patrons, professional development or get tips on library school. Whatever you re curious about.

One of my colleagues shared a similar idea for public libraries, essentially offering teens a chance to see what it s like behind the counter ” show them some of the technology that we use, explain how it works, explain what we do for customers and why it s important.

I like this kind of exposure, as it serves both the students / teens and the librarians well. The students / teens get to learn about librarianship as a profession, and the librarians can put a human face on the services and opportunities that we provide.

Libraries will continue always exist in some form or another. But we need young, sharp minds behind the counter so that we remain essential and relevant to people s lives ” and this challenge will become only more difficult in coming years, especially considering how rapidly the information environment is evolving. (Who ever knew that social networking sites would ever surpass pornography?)
